the Fugitive

from Still Motion by David Rowan

When I was 18 I auditioned for an experimental band called, 'Thrill Device', in Iver: 1980. You'll find a couple of theirs on this album, anyway, in 1981, without my knowing, the band sacked the keyboard player, Dave Balchin, and I soon followed ... :(

We started our own thing in the summer of 1981 and I knew a bass player form a school punk band, Andy Button and he bought Greg, the amazing drummer from Bray along too. It was months before we found the most suitable of unsuitable singers, so for a time, we honed a sound from playing instrumentals.

The Fugitive stood out. It began as a jam of fragmented bits of songs and experimental ideas with a different bass player and drummer and then, found its feet when Still Motion fell into place.

This recording was done with just a simple cassette tape player balanced on a window sill in a corner of the room. No sound checks were taken - it is just a recording of a moment ...
